Orion Racing India (Established in 2006)
Faculty Adviser: Dr. Manoj Janardan Pawar
In 2006, a bunch of amateur yet ambitious engineering students wants to get the most out of their engineering experience, rolled up their sleeves and took to the workshop with passion in their hearts, tools in their hands and a battered auto rickshaw engine. Thus, Orion Racing India the official formula student team of K.J Somaiya College of Engineering was born. Budding engineering students from various streams develop, design and manufacture a formula style car to take part in National and International Design Competitions in Germany, Italy and Hungary.
Orion Racing India is the first Formula Student team in India to successfully build an Aerospace grade Carbon Fibre Monocoque chassis for their latest combustion prototype Bellatrix. With the lightweight body and the self-tuned KTM Duke 390 engine, Bellatrix secured an overall 4th position in Statics at FS East 2018, Hungary. The team also secured an all-time high score of 110/150 in the design event and was selected in the Business Plan Presentation finals. In the past, the team has secured podium finishes in Formula Student Germany in the Cost Event as well.
The team has been crowned as the National Champion thrice in the combustion category. The first female formula student driver in India won a 3rd place in the acceleration event for the team in 2018. In Formula Bharat 2018, the team also secured a first position in Electric concept challenge as well. Taking up on the challenge Orion Racing India has decided to make its transition from a combustion to an electric vehicle for this year: where-in they are designing, fabricating and validating the vehicle powered by an electric powertrain. The team participated in Formula Student Germany 2019 competition with their first Electric Car.
